Event information

For the 2026 edition of miart (April 17-19), dedicated to the jazz music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, the vault of the museum will be open to the public by reservation. It will exceptionally host a selection of works by Robert Ryman and Mario Schifano from the Luigi and Peppino Agrati Collection, a prestigious contemporary art collection now part of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group thanks to the bequest of Cavalier Luigi Agrati. The works will provide a striking counterpoint to the two masterpieces presented by Gallerie d'Italia in the Intesa Sanpaolo Group Lounge at the fair: Ryman's Winsor 20 (1966) and Schifano's Analogo (1961). The dual initiative—curated by Nicola Ricciardi, director of miart, and titled Ryman / Schifano, Standard / Variations. 1960-1970: Controlled Improvisations from Modal to Monochrome – is a remembrance and tribute to two great artists, both passionate about music, who share a balance between rigor and improvisation that recalls modal jazz, although they belong to different artistic movements, one close to Pop Art and European post-informalism, the other to American minimalism.

The vault at Gallerie d’Italia in Piazza Scala, designed in the early 20th century by Luca Beltrami, features a distinctive and symmetrical architectural composition, with two imposing columns in a clearly Doric style, complete with a pulvinate and triglyphs. While traditionally inaccessible to museum visitors, the space no longer holds safety deposit boxes but something equally valuable—approximately 500 paintings from the Intesa Sanpaolo collection. These artworks are displayed on sliding mesh panels, creating an optimal system for both storage and conservation, while also offering visitors unexpected glimpses into curated exhibition routes.
