Event information

Masha, a young Belarusian model, almost obsessively devoted to caring for her body, meets Misha, a solitary man who works in a morgue, tending to the bodies of the deceased. Their encounter unsettles both of their certainties, giving rise to a fragile and unexpected relationship that forces them to confront the meaning of beauty and life, finding in each other a possible path toward escape and transformation.

Presented in competition at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival, White Snail marks the fiction debut of Elsa Kremser and Levin Peter, following their brilliant forays into documentary filmmaking with Space Dogs (2019) and Dreaming Dogs (2024). Set in a desolate and suspended Belarus and based on a true story, White Snail revisits the atmosphere of the directors’ previous works to explore the loneliness of two individuals living on the margins of society. The result is a sincere and delicate coming-of-age story, notable for its refined direction, the authentic and melancholic performances of its protagonists (Marya Imbro and Mikhail Senkov), and the compelling score by John Gürtler and Jan Miserre. A unique love story, far removed from the most predictable romantic clichés, that confirms the remarkable talent of the directing duo. “Our film portrays a turning point in two young lives in Belarus, a moment of defiance against stigma and exclusion. Open questions about a future not yet decipherable arise, like something smoldering in the haze of sultry summer nights” (Elsa Kremser, Levin Peter).
